Plant Southern Piedmont Natives

The Plant Southern Piedmont Natives campaign showcases the variety of beautiful plants native to the Southern Piedmont region of Virginia. This region includes all or parts of 18 counties and 3 cities. The counties include Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Brunswick, Campbell, Charlotte, Franklin, Halifax, Henry, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Prince Edward, and portions of Dinwiddie, Greenville, and Sussex east of the fall line. The cities in this region include Danville, Lynchburg, and Martinsville.

We are just getting organized. Because this is such a large region, we will be deploying our marketing campaign a few counties at a time. We are planning our initial deployment in the 4 counties of Franklin, Henry, Patrick and Pittsylvania and the cities of Danville and Martinsville.

Why Native Plants?

Native plants are critical for local ecosystems. Adult butterflies and moths will visit both native and non-native species for nectar, but they will only lay eggs on the very few species that their caterpillars will eat. Caterpillars are critical food for baby birds. Take away the larval host plants for the caterpillars and there will be much less food for the baby birds.
